Gary Campion’s conviction for murdering Frank Ryan was confirmed by the Court of Appeal on 30 November 2015. The murder took place in Moyross, Limerick, where Frank Ryan was shot twice in the head while seated in his car. Campion’s appeal argued that statements by witness Errol Ibrahim had been wrongly admitted. Giving judgment, Mr Justice George Birmingham said the court rejected all the arguments concerning those statements.
The court said the trial judge was best placed to assess possible unfairness and had properly admitted the statements. It also considered a challenge involving a newspaper article, but held that publication of one article did not require the jury to be discharged. The Court of Appeal confirmed Campion’s conviction for murdering Mr Ryan after considering the grounds advanced by his lawyers.
