Gareth Sheeran was committed to the Central Mental Hospital after a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict for murdering his father, at the Central Criminal Court on 28 July 2023.
The jury found Sheeran not guilty by reason of insanity after two psychiatrists agreed that schizophrenia meant he did not know his actions were wrong when he killed his father with a Second World War bayonet on Father’s Day 2021 at the family home in Firhouse, Dublin.
At the committal hearing, the judge received a psychiatrist’s report. Prosecution counsel said it indicated Sheeran would almost certainly relapse without the care he needed. The judge ordered continued treatment at the hospital in Portrane, with ongoing reviews by healthcare professionals.
