Gareth Carroll was sentenced to two years, with the final 12 months suspended, for bringing heroin and tablets into Mountjoy Prison, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, as reported on 9 March 2018. The court accepted that drug addiction and a credible threat to his brother had contributed to the offence.
Carroll had pleaded guilty to possessing heroin, diazepam and alprazolam worth €2,551 in total. The drugs were found after prison officers spotted paraphernalia in his cell and searched him.
The report said Carroll was stable on a methadone programme and attending Narcotics Anonymous at the time of sentencing.
