Gareth Byrne's reckless endangerment case was adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 5 November 2014. The charge arose from an incident outside Clontarf Garda Station, where Byrne poured petrol over himself and threatened to set himself on fire. Byrne had pleaded guilty, and Judge Desmond Hogan ordered an assessment of his suitability for community work before the matter was listed for January. Gardaí restrained him after he dropped the lighter, according to the evidence reported to the court.
The court was told that Byrne had become angry after his car was seized during a traffic stop when he could not produce proof of insurance. It was later established that the vehicle was insured. The report also said Byrne had 41 previous convictions, including road-traffic, drugs and knife-related offences.
This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
