This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Trevor Bolger was given a three-month sentence, suspended in full on strict conditions, for assaulting his then wife Margaret Loftus in 2012. Judge Martina Baxter said Bolger, a garda, had committed a serious offence and an egregious breach of trust. The maximum sentence for the offence was six months.
Loftus said after the hearing that the case had taken 14 years and 58 court appearances to reach its conclusion. She described the criminal justice process as every bit as damaging as the assault. Bolger had pleaded guilty to the Section 2 assault charge in April 2025.
