Ganson Building and Civil Engineering Contractors was fined €250,000 for workplace safety offences at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 7 February 2025. John Joe McAfee was killed when a steel structure fell on the mobile platform he was standing on at the Malahide school site on 3 June 2019.
The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure employees were not exposed to risk and failing to coordinate checks on safe working procedures. Judge Martin Nolan said Ganson, as the main contractor, had an obligation to make the site safe; he considered the guilty pleas, cooperation and expressions of remorse before imposing the fine, payable within six months.
