A former Christian Brothers teacher was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting nine boys. Judge Elva Duffy ordered the 83-year-old Dublin man, whose identity is legally withheld, to serve the sentence from Monday. He is already serving a four-year term for other offending.
The 38 offences took place at a Dublin city school between 1980 and 1995. The man was convicted after a trial last March and continues to deny offending, defence counsel John Griffin BL told the court. Griffin said his client had suffered a brain haemorrhage since the trial and asked the judge to consider his age and health.
Judge Duffy said victim impact reports described lasting effects on the victims, including damage to their education and aspirations and distrust of authority. She noted the defendant had shown no responsibility or remorse and commended the men for their evidence.
