ESB was fined €250,000 after pleading guilty to a workplace safety offence in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 9 March 2015. The company admitted failing to manage and conduct maintenance work safely at St Margret's Road, Finglas, Dublin, where apprentice electrician Shane Conlon died in January 2013. The court heard there was no visual warning or flag marking live electrical apparatus inside the cubicle. ESB also agreed to pay the costs of the Health and Safety Authority investigation and prosecution.

The fine followed evidence that Mr Conlon may have become confused about which parts of the equipment remained live. The judge said the accident did not mean nobody was at fault and that the penalty signified the seriousness of the matter.
