Eric Eoin Marques challenges US extradition on child porn charges
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Eric Eoin Marques was facing four US charges in extradition proceedings before the Irish courts: distributing child pornography, conspiring to distribute, advertising child pornography and conspiring to advertise.
He offered to plead guilty if prosecuted in Ireland, but the Director of Public Prosecutions had decided not to bring proceedings there. His defence argued that Ireland was the proper venue and that US sentencing and prison conditions were disproportionate; the prosecution disputed those points and said appropriate care was available in US prisons.
Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly ordered the extradition to proceed in 2015, subject to a 15-day postponement for an appeal. Later appeals were unsuccessful, but the report said that in 2017 his legal team was seeking another judicial review over the Justice Minister’s handling of the extradition, with judgment reserved. The proceedings were reported on 17 July 2017.
