Eoin Prizeman given suspended sentence for possessing child pornography

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Eoin Prizeman was given a 12-month sentence, fully suspended for three years, for possessing child pornography. The proceedings were reported on 28 November 2023.

Prizeman, then aged 35, pleaded guilty to possessing the material at his home in Killinarden, Tallaght, in August 2022.

At a sentence hearing earlier in November, Detective Garda Ronan O’Reilly said gardaí searched the home after Facebook contacted them about an account user who had uploaded a video. Brian Storan BL, for the State, said the video depicted the rape of a child aged nine or ten.

Investigators found 276 child abuse videos on Prizeman’s phone. Nine of a sample of ten were in the most explicit category. The court heard that Prizeman said someone he knew had sent him the videos; he was disgusted but did not delete them because he wished to maintain contact with that person.

Garda O’Reilly agreed with defence counsel Kieran Kelly BL that Prizeman had pleaded very early and that there was no suggestion he had made the videos or sent them to anyone. Kelly cited reports indicating a low risk of reoffending and that Prizeman had shown empathy and remorse.

Sentencing Prizeman on 28 November 2023, Judge Orla Crowe said the case justified an 18-month headline sentence. She imposed 12 months after considering mitigation, including his guilty plea, remorse and lack of previous convictions. The suspension required him to keep the peace, be of good behaviour and engage with the Probation Service.
