Edward O’Keeffe was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to five years in prison, with the final two and a half years suspended. He pleaded guilty to possessing a semi-automatic shotgun and a stolen Suzuki motorcycle. The offences took place at Huntsdown Drive on 4 December 2017. The proceedings were reported on 4 April 2019.
O’Keeffe, a supermarket manager, told gardaí that a criminal gang had put him under pressure to hold the items at his home in Mulhuddart. His counsel said he refused to name the people who gave him the items.
The court heard that gardaí, acting on a tip-off, obtained a warrant to search the house. They found the gun in a bag under the floorboards; it was wrapped in black tape and contained a spent cartridge.
Detective Garda Gavin Curran said that, as far as gardaí were aware, the gun had not been used in the commission of an offence. He also said O’Keeffe was not on any “garda radar”.
Judge Melanie Greally said organised crime gangs relied on people who were under the radar. She took account of the financial pressures O’Keeffe was under when suspending part of the sentence.
