Edmond Dunican was sentenced to eight years in prison, with the final two years suspended, by Judge Patricia Ryan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 26 January 2021. The sentence was backdated to 20 December 2018, when he went into custody. The suspended portion was conditional on good behaviour and no contact whatsoever with the three victims.
Dunican pleaded guilty to one count of carrying an imitation firearm with criminal intent. The offence took place at a Dublin city court on 20 December 2018. He had no previous convictions. The proceedings were reported on 26 January 2021.
The court heard that Dunican held up a judge, barrister Lisa Daly and his estranged wife with a fake pistol and a hoax pipe bomb. The judge refused his offer to let her leave and repeatedly asked him to drop the gun. The 17-minute siege ended after an armed garda negotiator persuaded him to surrender the gun and let the women go.
In a letter of apology to the victims, Dunican said he had never intended to hurt anyone. His barrister, Fiona Murphy SC, said he had become increasingly stressed before the offence, suffered from heart problems and was “at the end of his rope”.
Judge Ryan described the offence as planned and premeditated and said it had ongoing adverse effects on the victims. She reduced an 11-year sentence to eight years after considering mitigating factors including his remorse and state of mind.
