Dylan Mangan’s appeal against two concurrent five-year sentences for demanding money with menaces has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal. The judgment was delivered by Mr Justice Anthony M. Collins on 20 February 2026, with Kennedy J., Collins J. and Owens J. also named on the court.
Mangan pleaded guilty to Counts 1 and 3, two offences contrary to section 17 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994. The offences arose from threats and demands for money made on 20 March 2020. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, presided over for sentencing by His Honour Judge Martin Nolan, sentenced him on 28 January 2025 to two five-year terms running concurrently, with credit for time already served in custody.
The Court of Appeal rejected the challenge to the severity of the sentence and upheld the sentencing decision. Mangan’s counsel accepted that his involvement was greater than his co-accused’s and that he was the principal perpetrator. The court also accepted that no part of the sentence had to be suspended because no evidence of rehabilitation had been given.
The proceedings were reported on 20 February 2026.
