This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A Dublin man received a nine-year sentence, with one year suspended, at the Central Criminal Court on 31 July 2017. He was convicted of raping his 14-year-old niece twice between January 2012 and April 2013. The man cannot be named to protect his niece’s identity. The court heard that he continued to deny the charges. The judge said he had shown no remorse and had abused the trust of a vulnerable child.

The victim said she experienced lasting distress after the rapes and had struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. The court heard that she eventually reported the offences to gardaí in 2014.

An appeal application for legal aid was granted, according to the report.
