A Dublin man was sentenced to eight years in prison, with the final two years suspended, for offences against his partner and her mother. The proceedings were reported on 26 October 2022.
He pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to six charges of assault causing harm and one of assault; stealing the woman’s car, bank cards and tablet and stealing her mobile phone three times; criminal damage to her mother’s home; threatening to damage that home by fire; and threats to kill the woman. The offences occurred on dates between December 2017 and July 2019. Further breaches of a protection order were taken into account, and the State dropped a more serious charge.
Garda Gary Farrell said the offences involved seven assaults, including punching the woman in the stomach while she was pregnant. The report said that on another occasion the man dragged her down stairs and threatened to cut their baby out of her. In December 2017, he damaged her mother’s home with a pickaxe handle, causing more than €30,000 in damage.
Garda Farrell said the man threatened to rape his partner and their baby in March 2019. He was charged three days after she made a formal complaint and was granted bail. In June 2019, he assaulted her again while on bail and in breach of a protection order. He stole her tablet the following month and was remanded in custody two days after she reported it.
Justice David Keane imposed consecutive sentences totalling eight years, taking account of the offences against different people and the fact that some were committed on bail. He considered the guilty plea and apology, but said the letter showed very little sympathy or empathy towards the women.
The final two years were suspended for three years on conditions including good behaviour for three years, cooperation with recommended treatment programmes and attendance for an assessment for a domestic violence intervention programme. The judge cited a Probation Service assessment that the man was at high risk of reoffending.
