This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed Dublin man was jailed for four and a half years for assault causing harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 10 March 2023; the attack was at his former partner’s home.

He pleaded guilty to six charges, including assault causing harm, criminal damage by arson, violent behaviour in a garda station, breach of a protection order and two counts of obstructing a peace officer. The sentence also included a three-year restriction requiring contact with the injured party to be made through her solicitor after his release, unless the parties agreed otherwise.

Judge Elma Sheahan cited the attack taking place in the home and in front of the woman’s children, along with his previous criminal damage convictions, as aggravating factors. She also noted his repeated spitting at gardaí in custody. Mitigating factors included his guilty plea, difficulties growing up and good work history; the judge said his outburst in court diluted his apology.
