Rogerio Afonso (56) pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman at Dublin Airport on August 4th 2025. Judge Jonathan Dunphy imposed a 12-month sentence, which he said he was willing to suspend in full after Afonso had spent seven months in custody. The judge made Afonso’s return to Brazil in the care of his daughter a condition, and deferred finalising the sentence until later that week to allow her to be informed and arrange travel.
The judge remanded Afonso in custody until the sentence was finalised. He cited the persistence of Afonso’s actions, including following the woman around the airport, as an aggravating factor. He also noted that Afonso’s mental health had improved in custody after he resumed medication, and said he was viewed as posing a low risk of reoffending if he remained compliant with it.
