Judge Melanie Greally sentenced Donna Dineen to concurrent prison terms of six years for robbery and five years for assault, suspending the final two years on strict conditions. The proceedings were reported on 6 November 2018.

Dineen pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Saurjan Syergaz. She also admitted producing a knife and robbing his wallet on the same occasion. The offences took place at St Benedict’s Gardens, North Circular Road, on 8 May 2017.

The report said Dineen inflicted a 25cm stab wound on Mr Syergaz, who intended to help her after hearing her arguing with a man. On arrest, Dineen claimed she had acted in self-defence after he pulled a knife on her.

Judge Greally considered reports before the court, Dineen’s unstable early life and a letter expressing regret. Dineen had 17 previous convictions and gave birth to a son in custody in March 2018.
