A 36-year-old man who started a fight with a wedding party has received the benefit of the Probation Act on two public order charges after donating €300 to the court fund.

Gerald Carlin, Dungorman Upper, Castlefinn, Co. Donegal, pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in public and to using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour or words, at Dundalk Street, Carlingford, Co. Louth, on July 18 last.

Defence solicitor Ciarán Hughes told Dundalk District Court that his client had little recollection of what occurred. He had been on a stag in Carlingford.

Evidence was given that a fight outside a pub was reported to gardaí at 10.58pm.

Mr Carlin had initiated a fight with members of a wedding party unknown to him.

The people had dispersed and when gardaí got to the defendant handcuffs had to be used on him.

The court was told of “historic previous convictions”.
