Donal Maguire was committed to the Central Mental Hospital after a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict on harassment charges at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 27 June 2016. The harassment occurred in Dublin between February 2012 and February 2013. Judge Elma Sheahan ordered his detention for inpatient care and treatment until further order after finding that he was suffering from a mental disorder.

Maguire had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, described in court as early-onset dementia. The jury heard that he contacted the woman through a Valentine’s card, emails and Facebook despite warnings from her and his superiors. A Central Mental Hospital doctor said Maguire remained in need of treatment at a designated centre.
