This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to ten counts of dishonestly inducing people to pay him money after fraudulently claiming he had cancer and needed finances for treatment. The proceedings were reported on 2 July 2025.

The ten counts involved 13 complainants. The indictment spanned 2014 to 2022 and included two counts of using a false instrument with the intention of inducing another to accept it as genuine.

The court heard that one count of dishonestly inducing a person to pay money was being struck out and that the remainder of the indictment would be taken into consideration by the sentencing judge.

Colman Cody SC, defending Carey, said Carey had genuinely significant health issues and had required heart surgery the previous summer. Judge Patricia Ryan granted requests to extend legal aid and prepare a psychological report, set a hearing for 29 October and remanded Carey on continuing bail until then.
