Dinas Bimbiras was jailed for two years for possession of 117 stolen bicycles. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence on 17 October 2022. The proceedings were reported on 17 October 2022.

Bimbiras pleaded guilty to possessing 116 bicycles in a container at allotments in south Co Dublin in December 2019 and one bicycle at his home in May 2020.

Garda David Dolan estimated the bicycles’ total value at €50,000. Owners were traced for 34 bicycles; the remainder, also believed stolen, were sold at auction.

Bimbiras said he had spent €20,000 buying bicycles at markets around the outskirts of Dublin, intending to fix them up and sell them. Defence counsel said he had not been careful enough about their source.

Judge Nolan said the recklessness involved in acquiring the bicycles was at the highest level and was almost “wilful blindness”. He said Bimbiras must have suspected he was handling stolen property. The judge also noted mitigation including his cooperation and good work history.
