This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Diego Costa Silva was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity at the Central Criminal Court, reported on 8 March 2024. The jury’s verdict followed evidence that he was suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis when he killed his wife at their home in Finglas, Dublin 11.
At a Central Criminal Court hearing on 21 March 2024, Mr Justice Michael MacGrath ordered Costa Silva returned to the Central Mental Hospital for ongoing treatment. Consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Dearbhla Duffy told the court he continued to have a mental disorder and needed in-patient treatment; the report did not disclose her current diagnosis.
The court was told that Costa Silva killed Fabiola De Campos Silva on 4 November 2021. At trial, two forensic consultant psychiatrists said his mental disorder meant he did not understand the nature and quality of his actions or know that they were wrong.
His case was due to be mentioned before the court again on 29 July 2024.
