Judge Catherine Murphy imposed a two-year prison sentence on Diana Karacsony, suspended on condition that she pay €10,000 to Ruhama immediately. Ruhama is a charity that works with women affected by prostitution.
Karacsony pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assisting in keeping and managing a brothel. The offence concerned an apartment at The Asgard, Custom House Harbour, Dublin 1, between 1 January 2011 and 30 May 2012. The proceedings were reported on 28 July 2015.
The judge took account of Karacsony’s relative youth, absence of previous convictions and helpful admissions to gardaí.
One woman working at the premises told investigators that she was not afraid of Karacsony and described her as a friend. She said she relied on Karacsony to keep the premises safe. Detective Garda David Kenny told Diarmaid Collins BL, prosecuting, that there was no evidence that any of the 25 Hungarian women gardaí believed had worked there as prostitutes were trafficked, coerced or “anything other than willing”.
