Desmond Walsh, 80, was jailed for four years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for sexually abusing a child. He pleaded guilty to five sample counts of sexual assault committed at his home between January 2011 and June 2015. Judge Martin Nolan said the child had been abused on at least 25 occasions between the ages of five and nine. The judge set an eight-year headline sentence, then reduced it to four years after considering mitigating factors, including Walsh’s guilty plea and lack of previous convictions. He ordered that credit be given for any time Walsh had already spent in custody in Spain or Ireland on the matter.

The court heard the child disclosed the abuse after a school safety talk. Walsh was extradited from Spain to Ireland in November 2022. The judge described the case as distressing and told Walsh he should be ashamed of himself.
