Dermot Whelan was sentenced to three years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 9 July 2020 for possessing and distributing child pornography. The court heard that the offences involved images found on two computer devices at his Tallaght home. Whelan had pleaded guilty to both offences.
The case began after an undercover FBI agent received 25 images from an email address traced to Ireland. Gardaí later found videos and images on Whelan’s laptop and desktop computer. Judge Elma Sheahan said the offences were serious and imposed strict conditions, including compliance with Probation Service directions for two years after release.
