Derek Reid was jailed for six and a half years, with the final year suspended, at the Central Criminal Court, reported on 19 January 2023.

He pleaded guilty to two sexual assaults committed between 10 and 13 March 2018 and false imprisonment from 15 to 16 March 2018 in the woman’s Dublin city centre flat.

The sentences ran concurrently. Conditions attached to the suspended year included keeping the peace, engaging with addiction treatment and victim awareness programmes, and remaining drug free.

Justice Paul Burns said Reid’s actions were deliberately intended to degrade the woman. The Probation Service assessed him as being at high risk of committing intimate partner violence again.
