Denis Nolan jailed for two-and-a-half years for sexual assault

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Denis Nolan was resentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for oral rape and sexual assault at the Court of Appeal on 10 December 2024.

The term is to run after his existing 19-year aggregate sentence, bringing the adjusted overall sentence to 21-and-a-half years.

The appeal concerned an additional five-year sentence imposed after Nolan pleaded guilty to one count of oral rape and 36 counts of sexual assault against a schoolboy between 1994 and 2000, in Dublin and Wicklow.

The appeal court found that the five-year addition was too high when considered alongside Nolan’s existing sentences. It substituted a 12-year headline term, reduced to eight years after mitigation, then adjusted that term down by five-and-a-half years under the totality principle.
