Declan McGowan was sentenced to three years in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court by Judge Patricia Ryan after being found guilty of attempted coercion, impersonating a member of An Garda Síochána, assault and assault causing harm. The sentence was backdated from when he went into custody.

McGowan had pleaded not guilty to all counts and later told the court in October that he accepted the jury's verdicts. The offences occurred at Kimmage Road Lower, Dublin, in the early hours of 18 September 2021.

The proceedings were reported on 4 November 2022. The report said the judge treated McGowan's previous conviction for impersonating a garda and the adverse effects on both injured parties as aggravating factors, while noting his partner's death, reports and letters, and personal circumstances in mitigation.
