Dean Byrne on trial for conspiring to pervert justice

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Dean Byrne’s trial for conspiring to pervert the course of justice was before the Special Criminal Court on 8 May 2024, when prosecution and defence counsel delivered closing speeches.

The prosecution alleged Byrne acted with Aaron Brady to persuade witness Daniel Cahill not to testify at Brady’s murder trial. Prosecutor Lorcan Staines said Byrne shared photographs of Cahill’s statement with relatives, while defence counsel Padraig Dwyer disputed the alleged agreement and the evidence linking Byrne to Brady.

The court adjourned the case until 29 May 2024, when Brady was due to be sentenced in a separate matter. Justice Paul Burns said the court might have its verdict on Byrne ready then.
