Former garda press officer David Taylor alleged that he was directed to smear Sgt Maurice McCabe, the Charleton tribunal was told. The proceedings were reported on 11 June 2018.

Former commissioners Martin Callinan and Nóirín O'Sullivan denied there was any smear campaign.

Irish Sun journalist Eavan Murray told the tribunal she did not believe she had been negatively briefed about Sgt McCabe by Taylor or any garda. She said she would not allow herself to be used in a smear campaign and had not written about the matter.
