He also pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance and failing to produce insurance. The proceedings were reported on 6 December 2017.
Judge Melanie Greally sentenced him to two and a half years in prison, suspended for two and a half years on condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour upon release. She ordered him to pay €4,200 compensation to the victim and engage with the probation service for 12 months.
The judge also suspended McDonagh from driving for two years because of his guilty pleas to the insurance offences. She said his guilty plea and full admission to gardaí were sufficient mitigation to suspend the entire prison sentence.
