David Egan was found not guilty by reason of insanity of assault causing harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 5 November 2016. The assaults happened to two women in Dublin city centre on 14 April 2015.

The jury accepted the special verdict after psychiatrists agreed that Egan did not know his actions were wrong and could not stop himself. Judge Martin Nolan ordered that he be brought to the Central Mental Hospital for assessment, and adjourned the case to 17 November.
