Darren Weldon acquitted of IRA membership at Special Criminal Court

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Darren Weldon was acquitted of IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court on 31 July 2019. He had denied membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the IRA on 14 October 2014.

The three-judge court found it could not rely on DNA evidence from a number plate recovered after a 2010 car bomb attack outside Newry courthouse. It also found the remaining evidence did not establish that Mr Weldon knew about or controlled an image found on his phone, and declined to draw inferences from his Garda interviews.
