Darren Thompson is seeking a certificate declaring a miscarriage of justice after the Court of Appeal quashed his rape conviction in July 2020.

Thompson had pleaded not guilty to rape and was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury in May 2017. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment, with the final two years suspended; he had completed his jail sentence by the appeal hearing, and no retrial was ordered.

His counsel said previously undisclosed Tusla information concerned complaints the complainant had made against three other men, described as either unfounded or not followed up. Thompson admitted having sex but told gardaí the woman consented to him “joining in”. The proceedings were reported on 8 November 2022.
