Darragh Quinlivan has been jailed for 15 years for shooting Noel Campion in Limerick in 2007 as part of his participation in an organised crime group. Quinlivan had initially been charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and knowingly participating in the group’s activity by shooting Campion. The prosecution said he was not pleading guilty to murder.
Mr Justice Paul McDermott said the shooting was part of a plan to kill in cold blood and that Quinlivan was the gunman. The court heard that Campion was a passenger on a motorbike when Quinlivan emerged from a phone booth and fired at him. The judge set a 22-year headline term for the firearm offence, reduced it to 16 years after considering mitigation, and suspended the final 12 months for two years; the four-year sentence on the criminal-organisation charge is concurrent.
