Daniel Ramamoorthy lost his appeal against a sentence of two years and four months for sexually exploiting a 13-year-old boy. The Court of Appeal delivered judgment on 21 April 2026. The proceedings were reported on 16 June 2026.
Ramamoorthy was convicted of one count of sexually exploiting the child in 2017 by asking him over Snapchat to send a picture of his penis. A jury in his first Circuit Criminal Court trial failed to reach a verdict, and he was convicted following a second trial. He continues to maintain his innocence of that offence.
He pleaded guilty to a separate charge of possessing child sexual abuse material. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that he was found with three images and one video depicting young boys engaged in sexual activity with each other and an unknown adult man.
RTÉ reported that Judge Sinéad McMullen jailed Ramamoorthy for two years and four months at the Central Criminal Court on 24 March 2025. She described the exploitation as a serious breach of trust.
His lawyers argued that the sentence was excessive and that the sentencing judge had given insufficient weight to his background and public service. The appeal court rejected the appeal, saying he had not accepted responsibility for the offending. Judge John Edwards said evidence of previous pro-social conduct could carry only modest weight in mitigation without an acceptance of wrongdoing.
The Court of Appeal later granted The Irish Times access to character references submitted on Ramamoorthy’s behalf, including one from former TD Jim Glennon. Glennon apologised to the victim and their family and described writing the reference as an error of judgment.
