Daniel O'Callaghan appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with five offences connected to the theft and attempted theft of ATMs. Presiding judge Ms Justice Tara Burns remanded him in custody until Monday.

The proceedings were reported on 1 September 2020.

State solicitor Michael O’Donovan said O'Callaghan was charged with the attempted theft of an ATM at The Riverfront Hotel in Virginia, Co Cavan, on 14 August 2019, for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal organisation.

He was also charged with criminal damage and theft of an ATM on Main Street, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, on 3 April 2019. Both offences were alleged to have been for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal organisation.

He was also accused of participating or contributing to the possession of cash at Tullypole, Moynalty, Co Meath, on 14 and 20 August, intending to facilitate a serious offence by a criminal organisation or one of its members.

Defence barrister Seamus Lannon said O'Callaghan had been on strict bail for separate but related matters since January and had fully complied with its conditions. Detective Garda Jim Matthews agreed. Lannon said a €1,000 cash bond and an independent surety of €20,000 were already in place.
