Daniel Mazur (20), of Greenhills Road, Tallaght, was sentenced to 3½ years in prison with the final 12 months suspended at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on February 4th, 2019. He had pleaded guilty to possessing a black gas-powered revolver handgun and six brass bullets containing ball bearings at Firhouse Road, Firhouse, on June 9th, 2017.

The court heard that a motorist on the M50 between the Tallaght and Firhouse junctions saw a male on a mesh-covered bridge pointing a gun at traffic. Mazur was apprehended a short time afterwards by the armed support unit. A search of his backpack found a 6mm calibre air gun, ammunition and gas cylinders. No ammunition was in the chambers. He told gardaí he was “bored and messing”. He has 14 previous convictions.

Judge Melanie Greally said that, because of the items he had, Mazur had the “capacity to distract, alarm and expose motorists to danger”. Reports ordered by the court concluded that he had psychological issues but no mental disorder. The judge accepted that he had an absence of family support and was homeless and living a chaotic lifestyle at the time of his arrest.
