Criostóir MacCarthaigh’s appeal against his murder conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 3 November 2015.
He had been convicted in the Central Criminal Court on 19 December 2013 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The judgment said the trial followed a ten-day case involving the death of David White. MacCarthaigh’s defence was that Simon Griffin had killed White and fabricated an account implicating him.
The appeal challenged several evidential and jury-direction rulings, including the use of interview inferences, evidence from Ivan Ennis and Gary Walsh, previous convictions and forensic samples. The appeal court, comprising Birmingham J., Sheehan J. and Mahon J., rejected the appeal.
