Court of Appeal resentences Kieran Fogarty to 14 years, with final year suspended

The Court of Appeal ruled that Kieran Fogarty’s original eight-year sentence for offences including the death of student Joe Drennan was unduly lenient. On Thursday, it resentenced him to a total of 14 years in prison, with the final year suspended. The dangerous-driving sentence was to run consecutively to the sentence for the firearms offence, which was reduced by a year.

The court also disqualified Fogarty from driving for 20 years after his release. It heard that Drennan, 21, was killed in Limerick in October 2023 when Fogarty’s car struck him at a bus stop. Fogarty had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and received a concurrent sentence for a drive-by shooting offence.
