The Court of Appeal declared a couple’s convictions for female genital mutilation a miscarriage of justice on 19 June 2026.
Judge Patrick McCarthy said newly discovered facts in expert reports showed, on the balance of probabilities, that the applicants were factually innocent. The couple’s convictions had been quashed in 2021 over serious inaccuracies in the translation of their testimony to the jury.
The DPP dropped the charges after a retrial jury in 2023 failed to reach agreement. The court also scheduled a further hearing on costs for the last day of term.
