Costel Pirvu’s sentence for rape was increased to ten years’ imprisonment, with the final 18 months suspended, by the Court of Appeal, which delivered judgment on 19 January 2023.
The court quashed his original six-and-a-half-year term after finding the discount for the difficulty of serving a sentence without English was excessive. Pirvu had been convicted of three counts of rape and one of false imprisonment following a trial at the Central Criminal Court.
The offences took place in a town in the west of Ireland in the early hours of 4 February 2018. The appeal court said the sentencing judge had placed little emphasis on Pirvu’s previous conviction for attempted rape and that the probation report described his attitude to the victim as disturbing.
