Conti Birali jailed for assault causing serious harm

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Conti Birali was jailed for nine years for assault causing serious harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 21 March 2024.

The assault took place on the Old Navan Road in Dublin 7 on 31 July 2022. Birali also admitted violent disorder with others during the same incident.

The court heard that Birali and two associates waited for Austin Doherty to leave a nightclub before attacking him. Mr Doherty suffered severe head injuries and brain trauma; he now uses a wheelchair and needs daily care. The prognosis was that his condition was unlikely to improve.

Judge Martin Nolan said Birali was “the author of the entire incident” and that such injuries could be expected when someone was kicked and stamped on while on the ground.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
