Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced CJ Losty, 22, to three years, with the final 12 months suspended for two years on strict conditions. Judge Sinead Ní Chulachain also disqualified him from driving for six years and backdated the sentence to 8 November.
Losty pleaded guilty to two counts of endangerment, three counts of dangerous driving, having no insurance and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.
The court heard that Losty was 18 when he led gardaí on a high-speed chase in a stolen car through Blanchardstown and Mulhuddart. He drove through three green areas, two where children were playing, and onto the M3 in the wrong direction for a stretch. The car reached speeds above 160km/h. The judge said the potential for harm was enormous and noted that gardaí, children and members of the public were endangered.
Losty had 70 previous convictions, including 19 for dangerous driving, and was disqualified from driving for five years at the time. The judge considered his guilty pleas, difficult background and vulnerabilities when setting the sentence. His barrister, Nicola Cox, said he accepted that others had been put in danger and expressed his deep remorse and shame for the fear caused.
