Ciaran Moran was sentenced to life for murder at the Central Criminal Court on 20 May 2015. The victim, Gerard Donnelly, was found after being set on fire in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in November 2013.

Moran had pleaded not guilty but changed his plea to guilty during the trial after the judge ruled that evidence of his confession could be heard. The court heard that he had beaten Mr Donnelly with a lump hammer and photographed him after the killing.

The mandatory life sentence was backdated to 3 December 2013, when Moran was remanded in custody.
