Ciaran Maguire loses IRA membership appeal over shooting threat

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Ciaran Maguire lost his appeal against an IRA membership conviction at the Court of Appeal, reported on 30 July 2021.

The case concerned a threat in Co Meath to shoot an accident victim unless he withdrew an insurance claim against a former employer.

The Court of Appeal dismissed all grounds, ruling that Maguire’s rearrest without a warrant was lawful, surveillance evidence was admissible and interventions by the Special Criminal Court during cross-examination were not unfair.

Maguire had been jailed for four years and 11 months after the Special Criminal Court convicted him of IRA membership in May 2018.
