Christopher O'Callaghan was sentenced to six years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended, for the manslaughter of his grandfather Joseph O'Callaghan, 66. Mr Justice Paul McDermott sentenced him at the Central Criminal Court on 11 May 2020.

In March 2020, Christopher O'Callaghan pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. The killing occurred on 2 July 2018 at Galway's Close, Galway's Lane in Douglas, Cork.

The judge said O'Callaghan had consumed considerable alcohol before confronting his grandfather about alleged sexual abuse of two individuals. He said the grandfather initially refused to answer but then admitted the abuse, after which O'Callaghan “snapped”. The judge said O'Callaghan had accepted hitting, kicking and stomping on his grandfather.

The detective agreed with defence counsel Tom Creed SC that other individuals had confirmed the two individuals had been sexually abused by Joseph O'Callaghan. The court also heard that Joseph O'Callaghan had been found not guilty of sexually assaulting a child; the detective said that was a completely separate incident.

Mr Justice McDermott said he was satisfied Christopher O'Callaghan had not set out to kill or seriously injure his grandfather, but said he had no entitlement to beat him for alleged wrongdoing. He noted the guilty plea, sincere remorse and efforts to address alcohol abuse in mitigation.

The suspension terms included abstaining from alcohol, attending drug and alcohol treatment, and continuing his studies and employment.
