Chico Makamda jailed for false imprisonment in Dublin

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Chico Makamda received a three-year prison sentence for false imprisonment, with the last year suspended. The proceedings were reported on 20 May 2015.

He pleaded guilty to the charge at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The attack happened on 7 August 2013 at about 2am on Blessington Street in Dublin. Melita Cahill was walking by herself when Makamda seized her right wrist and attempted to pull her into a laneway. She escaped after hitting and kicking him and calling for help.

In her victim impact statement, Cahill described needing almost a year before she could venture out unaccompanied during daylight. She said she continued to have panic attacks and anxiety, could not go out alone after dark and no longer felt safe.

Sentencing had been postponed because Makamda disputed having a conviction in Tralee District Court for exposing himself indecently to two teenage girls in Kerry.

A garda and a superintendent both told prosecutor Gerardine Small that Makamda was responsible for that offence. The garda had recorded the teenagers’ statement; the superintendent had been in court on the day of the indecent-exposure trial. The report recorded a €50 fine for that incident.
