Charleton tribunal probes Tusla errors over McCabe file

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Charleton tribunal continued examining errors in a Tusla file concerning Garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe, reported on 15 July 2017. The tribunal was investigating how an allegation of digital rape came to be recorded against McCabe, although no such allegation had been made. The error arose when material from another client was pasted into a report, and Tusla later repeated it in correspondence with McCabe.

Social worker Kay McLoughlin told the tribunal she had not reviewed the file fully before writing to McCabe in 2015. The report said the tribunal was also examining whether the file formed part of an alleged smear campaign by senior Garda management.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
